An animal keeper at Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad died on Saturday after being attacked by an elephant. The keeper, Shahbaz, had entered the elephant enclosure to clean as part of his regular duties when he was struck by Vijay, the elephant. Other staff members quickly removed Shahbaz from the enclosure and rushed him to Apollo DRDO Hospital, but he was declared dead by doctors at around 4 pm.
Zoo officials are currently investigating the incident to gather more information. It is known that Vijay was originally from the wild and was one of two elephants captured in the Tirumala Tirupati hills area in 1996. It is believed that the elephant may have a “rogue gene” that caused it to attack the animal keeper.
