Thousands of Shia devotees dressed in black to symbolize grief began the historic procession from Bibi ka Alawa in Dabeerpura and reached Yakutpura in the afternoon. The Bibi ka Alam is being carried on an elephant named Madhuri, which was brought from Karnataka.
The procession is being led by young people on camels and is passing through massive crowds. Thousands of men who are beating their chests have gathered to participate in this important event for Shia Muslims. Many barefooted and bare-chested mourners from different Anjumans are also taking part in the ritual bloodletting known as tatbir.
The procession will pass through various areas including Yakutpura, Suraj Talkies, Alijah Kotla, Sardar Mahal, Charminar, Gulzar Houz, Panjesha, Mandi Mir Alam, Purani Haveli, Darushifa, Imliban, and will culminate at Chaderghat in the evening.
This procession, also known as Youm-e-Ashura procession, is observed on the 10th of Muharram in the Islamic calendar. It marks the martyrdom anniversary of Hazrat Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad.
The City police have already released a traffic advisory for residents of Old City regarding the procession route and traffic diversions. The authorities have made elaborate arrangements to observe Youm-e-Ashura on Sunday and ensure a smooth passage for the procession until its conclusion.
