Will the 5-minute Yoga directive in Telangana government schools continue to be unsuccessful?

The State government has approved the school academic calendar for the year 2024-25, raising questions about the decision-making process. Parents of children in government-run schools may need to demand more transparency and accountability from the school education department.

One particular concern is the inclusion of daily Yoga and Meditation sessions for Classes I to X in the academic calendar. However, experts have pointed out that the way these activities are prescribed goes against established guidelines and protocols for Yoga.

According to AYUSH guidelines, Yoga practices should start with a prayer or invocation in a conducive environment. Sessions should be performed slowly and with awareness of the body and breathing. It is also recommended to practice Yoga on an empty stomach, not immediately after a meal. Additionally, there are specific recommendations for adolescent girls and women regarding Yoga practice during menstruation.

Despite these guidelines, the school education department has mandated five-minute Yoga and meditation sessions without providing clear instructions or trained staff. Many schools have not been able to implement these activities effectively, raising doubts about their inclusion in the academic calendar.

Without proper guidance and resources, it is challenging for schools to conduct meaningful Yoga and meditation sessions as outlined in the academic calendar. Students may not be able to fully benefit from these activities if they are not carried out in accordance with established practices.
