Will 'Hatiyan ka Jhad' soon be off-limits to visitors?

Hyderabad: Construction works near the Naya Qila precincts of Golconda are causing concern among locals, who fear that access to the famous ‘Hatiyan ka Jhad’ (elephant tree) Baobab may be lost. The Hyderabad Golf Course (HGC) has started widening a moat channel near the Shah Hatam Lake, which is affecting the pathway to the tree that visitors come to see.

The locals have reported that the HGC is expanding the moat channel into a nala next to the Naya Qila boundary wall. This development is threatening to block off the pathway to the iconic tree. Concerned citizens have noted that the polluted waters flowing from the lake are already harming the nearby Bagh-e-Qutb and Persian garden. The ongoing construction has also prevented visitors from accessing the area.

Furthermore, the expansion of the golf club and development activities are posing a risk to the heritage structure of Naya Qila and its walls. The deteriorating condition of the walls, which are close to collapsing, has not been addressed by authorities. Despite these concerns, little action has been taken to restore the historical site.

The Baobab tree, which is over 400 years old, is native to Africa and known for its large trunk measuring 89 feet in width. Legend has it that during the Qutub Shahi era, 40 men (notorious thieves) could hide inside the cavity of this tree trunk. The unique shape of the tree, resembling a giant elephant’s foot, makes it a popular attraction for visitors.
