Hyderabad: Long-Pending Roadwork Begins in Shaikpet After Residents Speak Out

Following a report published in Hans India on January 27, titled “Shaikpet residents blow whistle on rampant corruption in GHMC,” the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has finally taken action. Long-delayed roadwork in Surya Nagar Colony, located in Tolichowki, Shaikpet, has now commenced.

The issue came to light when residents of Surya Nagar Colony raised complaints about corruption within GHMC Circle 18. They alleged that officials were engaging in corrupt practices, demanding bribes, and abusing their authority, which caused significant delays in public works and resulted in poor infrastructure. These complaints were lodged with the Telangana Vigilance and Enforcement Department.

The Surya Nagar Welfare Association, under the Jubilee Hills Colonies Forum and led by Asif Sohail Hussain, formally filed a complaint with Vigilance and Enforcement Department Director A.R. Srinivas. The complaint highlighted delays in civic projects and accused officials of stalling work unless bribes were paid.

One key issue was roadwork worth ₹70 lakh that was sanctioned and tendered over a year ago but never completed. Residents alleged that the delay was due to officials demanding bribes. However, after the issue gained media attention, GHMC finally initiated the pending work. On Saturday, 500 meters of roadwork began, bringing relief to residents.

The residents expressed their gratitude to the officials who took steps to address the problem. However, they also emphasized that their fight is not yet over.

“The roadwork has started, but we are still waiting for the sports complex and community hall projects to begin,” said Asif Sohail. He warned that if GHMC continues to delay these projects, the residents will escalate the matter by filing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the High Court.

“We are closely monitoring the situation. If there is any further delay, we will take legal action. GHMC must fulfill its promises—there is no alternative,” Sohail added.

While the commencement of roadwork marks a victory for the residents, they remain determined to ensure all pending civic projects in their area are completed without further delays.
