Vajrotsava celebration prompts renovation of Akkanna Madanna temple in Hyderabad City.

The Sri Akkanna Madanna temple in Hyderabad’s Old City is celebrating 75 years with a Vajrotsava fete that will last for 75 days from April 26 to July 19. The temple has historical significance because Akkanna and Madanna, two brothers who served as commander in chief and Prime Minister, respectively, during the rule of Tana Shah, used to worship here. Legend has it that the brothers would perform pooja before leaving for Golconda fort for their day’s work. After their deaths, the temple was closed until Hyderabad was merged into the Indian union in 1948. Since then, the temple has been open to devotees and has organized Bonalu and Mahankali Jatara on a grand scale for the last 74 years.

To mark the temple’s milestone, the committee has decided to have special Abhishekam, Alankarana, Archana, Sri Lalita Sahasranama Parayanam, Kumkumarchana, Chandi Havanam, and Anna prasadam every day for the next 75 days. The festivities will begin on April 26 and will be inaugurated by Animal Husbandry Minister T Srinivas Yadav. The Bonalu festivities will start in the city on June 25 and will continue until July 19.
