Karunakar Reddy’s Mission to Conserve Water
Water scarcity is a growing issue worldwide, and India is no exception. However, one man has taken it upon himself to lead a change in water conservation. Karunakar Reddy, the founder of the NGO Igniting Minds, has helped build and revive over 20,000 water harvesting structures and borewells in different states of India. His efforts have not only reduced water shortages in cities but have also inspired many to adopt sustainable water-saving practices.
A Childhood That Inspired Change
Reddy grew up in Wanaparthy, where he saw firsthand how difficult it was for people to get clean drinking water. This experience left a deep impact on him and shaped his vision for the future. Determined to prevent future generations from facing the same struggles, he founded Igniting Minds with the goal of promoting water conservation and sustainable solutions.
Spreading Awareness on Water Conservation
Reddy and his team use social media campaigns and door-to-door awareness drives to educate people about rainwater harvesting. Their mission is simple: to collect and store rainwater for essential needs such as drinking, cooking, and sanitation. Proper treatment of harvested rainwater ensures it is safe for consumption.
Taking Action with Practical Solutions
Beyond raising awareness, Reddy’s initiative focuses on real solutions. Rainwater harvesting is not just an eco-friendly practice—it is necessary to tackle water shortages. By recharging groundwater levels, it helps reduce the pressure on municipal water supplies, especially during hot summers when water demand is high.
To make this solution accessible to all, Igniting Minds helps people install rainwater harvesting systems at affordable costs. These systems last for up to 20 years, making them a long-term investment in water security.
A Journey of Dedication
Reddy started his water conservation journey in 1998. Over the last 28 years, his mission has expanded beyond Telangana to states like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, New Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. His efforts have resulted in saving nearly 3.5 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of water every year.
His dedication has earned him nearly 180 awards from various government and environmental organizations. He has also been honored with the title ‘Green Man of India’ by both local and central authorities.
A Vision for a Greener Future
Karunakar Reddy’s vision is to make the planet greener and more livable. “My small spark has now become a wildfire. People are slowly realizing the importance of conserving water sustainably,” he says. He encourages everyone to take responsibility for saving and restoring natural resources, especially water.
With urban areas facing severe water shortages, Reddy’s work proves that determined individuals can make a difference. His mission serves as an inspiration to all, showing that with collective effort, a water-secure future is possible.
