US under pressure to reduce lengthy waiting period for Green Cards for Indians

A group of US lawmakers is asking the Biden administration to take action to help Green Card applicants from India. These applicants have been waiting for 195 years and are stuck in a difficult situation. The lawmakers, led by Congressmen Raja Krishnamoorthi and Larry Bucshon, sent a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, requesting executive action to provide relief to high-skilled employment-based visa holders.

In their letter, the lawmakers also asked the administration to make all dates for filing employment-based visa applications “current” in the Bureau of Consular Affairs’ published Employment-Based Visa Bulletin.

The current situation, which includes a seven percent country cap on employment-based Green Card allocation, is causing significant problems, especially for countries like India. The backlog for Indian applicants has reached an astonishing 195 years. The Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora Studies (FIIDS USA) has also appealed to President Joe Biden, highlighting the disproportionate impact on Indian tech professionals. These professionals are a crucial part of the highly skilled STEM talent and US-educated graduates who contribute to the United States’ competitive edge in technology industries.
