As of April 11, 2023, the United States has experienced 11,523 deaths and over 9,000 injuries due to gun violence. Shockingly, even minors have been involved in hundreds of these cases. In just the first 100 days of the year, there have been at least 15 mass killings in which four or more people were killed, not including the shooter. The USA TODAY/Associated Press/Northeastern University database has been tracking this information since 2006, with James Alan Fox of Northeastern University overseeing it. Of the 15 mass killings, four were public shootings and the rest were family-related incidents. California had three mass killings, while Alabama and Florida each had two. Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Utah each had one. A total of 79 people died and 20 were injured in these mass killings. It is concerning that the US has only experienced more than 15 mass killings by April 10 twice since 2006. The Gun Violence Archive defines mass shootings as those where at least four victims are hit by gunfire. In 2023, there have been 146 mass shootings so far – a 10% increase from the previous record year of 2021. The Gun Violence Archive has reported that at least 11,523 people have died from gunfire and over 9,000 have been injured. Shockingly, hundreds of children under age 11 have been killed or injured, along with over a thousand teens.
