US Mountain Guide Achieves Rare 'Triple Crown' While Mount Everest's Death Toll Reaches 12 This Season

Garrett Madison, a US mountain guide, climbed Mount Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse peaks in one season, which is known as the Mount Everest region “triple crown.” Madison climbed Lhotse on Thursday, a day after his 13th ascent of Everest. He also climbed Nuptse on May 8. Madison is the owner of Madison Mountaineering, which is based in Seattle. Only a few other mountaineers have achieved this feat. Madison was accompanied by three sherpa climbers on all three peaks.

The death toll on Mount Everest this season has reached 12. Canadian national Petrus Albertyn Swart died on Thursday after falling sick in the “death zone” while going to the summit. At least three other climbers are missing or out of contact.

British climber Kenton Cool, who climbed the triple crown in 2013, praised Madison as an “unflappable expedition leader” who quietly goes about his job. Cool also set a new record of 17 summits of Everest last week.

A Nepali mountaineer, Kami Rita Sherpa, climbed Everest for the 28th time this week, which is the most by any mountaineer.
