US Lawmakers Pass 'Bill of Rights' to Empower Parents in the Ongoing 'Culture War'

The US House of Representatives has passed a bill called the “Parents Bill of Rights”, which aims to give parents greater choice in schools. The bill, which was passed in a party-line vote, demands transparency from public schools, with the requirement to publish their curriculum and send parents lists of library books. The legislation also calls for teachers to be available for face-to-face discussions with parents and for schools to be transparent about incidents of violence. However, the bill is expected to fail in the Democrat-controlled Senate. Education has become a contentious issue in US politics, with protesters attending school board meetings to voice their opposition to classes teaching children about gender, sexuality, and race. Republicans have been falsely accusing Democrats of criminalizing genuine debate on what children should be learning. The House also signed off on Republican amendments asserting the right of parents to know if their child’s school allows transgender students in bathrooms and join sports teams that do not correspond with their biological sex.
