The House Freedom Caucus is opposing a new debt deal that could lead to Kevin McCarthy’s removal from his role as US House Speaker. McCarthy is accused of breaking promises he made to the group to gain their support. The deal received approval from the House Rules Committee, but the House Freedom Caucus wants Republicans to vote against it. They feel the debt limit deal does not meet their standards and that they wanted more spending cuts. The package could reduce deficits by $1.5 trillion over the decade.
North Carolina House Representative Dan Bishop publicly supported ousting Kevin McCarthy. The House Freedom Caucus is also calling for his removal from the role of US House Speaker. Rep. Scott Perry, Pennsylvanian Republican, the chairman of the Freedom Caucus, said, “This deal fails, fails completely, and that’s why these members and others will be absolutely opposed to the deal.”
Matt Gaetz, a Republican opposed to McCarthy’s speakership, said changes McCarthy negotiated with Biden were cosmetic in nature. He said there is potential for triggering “an immediate motion to vacate”. This rarely employed measure has not resulted in the removal of any Speaker thus far.
