Hyderabad: The University Grants Commission (UGC), India’s top higher education regulatory body, has taken strict action against three universities in Rajasthan for not following its regulations regarding PhD programs.
The UGC has banned these universities from admitting students into PhD courses for the next five years. The institutions affected by this decision are OP JS University in Churu, Sunrise University in Alwar, and Singhania University in Jhunjhunu.
To ensure compliance with regulations, the UGC has formed a standing committee to monitor these universities. This committee will check if the universities are following proper procedures for awarding PhD degrees. It will also suggest corrective measures and recommend actions against institutions that violate the rules.
After analyzing information submitted by the universities, the committee found that they did not adhere to the UGC PhD regulations and academic norms. The universities were asked to provide explanations, but their responses were deemed unsatisfactory. As a result, the committee advised the UGC to bar them from admitting PhD candidates for five years.
The UGC has also issued a warning to students and parents, advising them not to enroll in PhD programs offered by these universities. It clarified that PhD degrees awarded by these institutions without UGC approval are not valid for higher education or employment purposes.
Speaking to The Hans India, UGC Chairman Prof. M. Jagadesh Kumar emphasized the importance of universities maintaining high standards in PhD programs. He stated that the UGC would take strict action against institutions that fail to comply with its regulations.
He further added, “The UGC is currently examining the quality of PhD programs in other universities as well. If violations are found, similar actions will be taken. It is crucial to hold such institutions accountable to protect the integrity and global reputation of Indian higher education.”
