Hyderabad to Get 286 New Electric Buses by 2025
The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) plans to introduce 286 electric buses in Hyderabad during the first half of 2025. This move is part of a larger effort to create a pollution-free public transport system in the city.
Currently, Hyderabad has 254 electric buses in operation, which maintain an impressive 80% average occupancy rate. The new fleet is expected to serve high-demand routes by the end of 2025, further improving the city’s public transportation network.
Transition to Sustainable Transport
The TGSRTC is working to gradually replace diesel buses with electric ones to reduce emissions and promote environmental sustainability. As part of its long-term goals, the agency aims to have a total of 2,500 electric buses on Hyderabad’s roads in the coming years.
New Charging Stations and Depot Upgrades
To support the growing fleet of electric buses, a dedicated electric vehicle (EV) charging station is being installed at the Ranigunj facility. This station is expected to be operational within the next three months and will serve approximately 100 electric buses departing from the area.
Additionally, the Hayathnagar bus depot already operates 55 electric buses, and the Kukatpally depot is set to receive 100 more. To expand the city’s electric bus network further, 45 electric Metro Express buses will also be deployed from the Kukatpally depot.
Cost-Effective and Eco-Friendly Benefits
Officials highlight the significant financial and environmental advantages of transitioning to electric buses. Operating costs for an electric bus are just Rs 8 per kilometre, compared to Rs 20 per kilometre for a diesel bus. Electric buses, both AC and non-AC, also cover an annual mileage of about 70,000 kilometres, making them more efficient and less expensive to maintain than their diesel counterparts.
By adopting electric buses, the TGSRTC is not only reducing operating costs for the transportation system but also making a substantial contribution to lowering Hyderabad’s pollution levels. This initiative represents a major step toward sustainable and eco-friendly urban transport in the city.
