Kolkata: Vegetable prices are skyrocketing, with tomatoes being particularly expensive. The common people are struggling to afford them as the prices have reached record levels. The price of tomatoes has increased from Rs. 58 per kilogram to Rs. 148 per kilogram nationwide. However, in the Purulia district of West Bengal, the price has risen even higher to Rs. 155. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has attributed this rise to the rapid deterioration of quality and reduced production of tomatoes.

In Mumbai, tomatoes are being sold at a minimum of Rs. 58 per kilogram, while in Delhi, the price is Rs. 110, in Chennai, it is Rs. 117, and in Kolkata, it has reached Rs. 148. In the wholesale market, tomatoes are available for Rs. 83.29 per kilogram. This has led to an increase in the prices of tomatoes across the country, ranging from Rs. 120 to Rs. 140 per kilogram, depending on the state and the local market. Online shopping applications like Swiggy Instamart and Blinkit are selling tomatoes for Rs. 140 per kilogram in Delhi.

The current season has witnessed a significant increase in tomato prices due to various reasons, with prices expected to further rise in the next 15 days or so. Factors such as extreme weather conditions and transport disruptions have contributed to the decrease in tomato production, causing a shortage in supply and subsequently driving up the prices.

The government is under pressure to address this issue and provide relief to the common people who are finding it difficult to afford essential vegetables like tomatoes. Efforts are being made to stabilize the prices and ensure an adequate supply of tomatoes in the market. Authorities are also urging consumers to explore alternative options and make informed choices while purchasing vegetables.

The rising prices of tomatoes have sparked concerns among households, especially those belonging to lower-income groups, as tomatoes are an essential ingredient in many Indian dishes. The government is closely monitoring the situation and is expected to take necessary measures to stabilize the prices and ensure that essential commodities remain affordable for all sections of society.

In conclusion, the soaring prices of tomatoes in Kolkata and across the country have become a matter of worry for consumers. The government is taking steps to address this issue and stabilize the prices, while also urging people to consider alternative options in their daily cooking.
