Telangana Explores Hydel Power Projects in Himachal Pradesh

The Telangana government has shown interest in setting up hydel power projects in Himachal Pradesh. This follows Himachal Pradesh’s invitation for proposals to develop 22 hydroelectric projects on a Build, Own, Operate, and Transfer (BOOT) basis. In response, a team of senior officials from Telangana’s Energy Department recently visited Himachal Pradesh to explore the opportunity.

During their visit, the officials held discussions with Himachal Pradesh’s Energy Secretary and inspected two project sites: the SELI Hydro Electric Project (400 MW) and the MIYAR Hydro Electric Project (120 MW). After evaluating the potential, the team recommended focusing on projects with a capacity of over 100 MW.

Telangana’s State Energy Minister, Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu, along with the Principal Secretary to Energy, met with Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Thursday. In this meeting, Bhatti formally submitted a letter expressing Telangana’s interest in the SELI and MIYAR projects.

The minister also requested the Himachal Pradesh government to share a draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for further review. Telangana plans to take the necessary steps to sign the MoU as soon as possible.

The electricity generated from these hydel power projects will be used to meet Telangana’s energy needs, helping to strengthen the state’s electricity supply for both current and future demands.

Bhatti emphasized that this initiative is a significant milestone in Telangana’s efforts to boost power generation capacity and address the growing energy requirements of the state.
