Telangana's Liquor Sales Reach Rs 402 Crore on New Year’s Eve
Telangana witnessed a historic surge in liquor sales during this year’s New Year celebrations. According to the Telangana Excise Department, a staggering Rs 402 crore worth of liquor was sold on December 31 alone, marking a significant boost to the state’s revenue.
The spike in sales was largely driven by increased alcohol consumption during the festive season. From December 28 to the morning of January 1, liquor sales across the state reached an estimated Rs 1,800 crore—a figure far higher than the usual sales volumes recorded during other times of the year.
On average, Telangana sees daily liquor sales ranging between Rs 100 crore and Rs 150 crore, with weekend figures sometimes climbing to Rs 200 crore to Rs 300 crore. However, the final days of December saw these numbers double, as residents celebrated the end of the year in grand style.
The liquor trade in Telangana was bolstered by 2,620 outlets, 1,117 bars, and numerous pubs and restaurants participating in the sales. These establishments were supplied by 19 depots operated by beverage companies, ensuring smooth distribution of alcohol across the state during the high-demand period.
December 2024 also saw remarkable sales figures for the entire month. Over 3,82,265 cases of liquor and 3,96,114 cases of beer were sold, surpassing previous years’ records. In comparison, December 2023 recorded liquor sales worth Rs 4,292 crore, while December 2022 saw sales of Rs 3,100 crore.
Despite the impressive performance, officials noted that the total liquor sales for December 2024 slightly missed the previous year’s record. By December 30, the state had reached Rs 3,662 crore in sales, with New Year’s Eve pushing the final tally closer to Rs 4,000 crore.
The Telangana government has greatly benefited from this surge in alcohol consumption, with significant revenue flowing into its treasury. The Excise Department highlighted that the New Year period has become a major economic driver, with liquor sales playing a pivotal role in boosting the state’s fiscal health.
