Telangana State appeals to KRMB regarding AP’s excessive utilization of Krishna water

0

The Telangana government has complained to the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) about Andhra Pradesh taking too much water from the Krishna river. The complaint states that Andhra Pradesh is using more water than it is entitled to and encroaching on Telangana’s share of water in the reservoirs. The Telangana government has asked the KRMB to intervene and instruct Andhra Pradesh to stop using Telangana’s share of water.

Telangana doesn’t have its own offline storage, so it has kept its balance of 18.701 TMC of water in the Nagarjuna Sagar Project reservoir for drinking water and irrigation needs. However, Andhra Pradesh has requested 5 TMC of water from the reservoir for drinking water in July and has used Telangana’s share of water. This is against the rules, as the water in the reservoir belongs to Telangana since it hasn’t received any inflow from the Srisailam project.

Last year, Andhra Pradesh used 205.20 TMC excess water compared to its entitlement under the 50:50 ratio. Even considering the 34:66 sharing ratio between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh still used 51.745 TMC excess water. The Telangana government has urged the KRMB chairman to bring this issue to the attention of the Ministry of Jal Shakti.

The KRMB operates according to the provisions of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act 2014. It is an autonomous body that manages and regulates the waters in the Krishna Basin in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The water available in the Krishna basin is shared between the two states in a ratio of 512:299.

In summary, Telangana has filed a complaint against Andhra Pradesh for using too much water from the Krishna river. They have asked the KRMB to intervene and stop Andhra Pradesh from using Telangana’s share of water. The KRMB operates as an autonomous body and manages the waters in the Krishna Basin according to the provisions of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act 2014.
