Telangana sets an example in food security and PDS reforms

Telangana’s Civil Supplies Department has made significant improvements in food security and public distribution, setting an example for the entire country. DS Chauhan, Principal Secretary (Food & Civil Supplies), highlighted these achievements, emphasizing the state’s commitment to transparency, efficiency, and technology.

Speaking at the International Leadership Program at IIM Raipur, Chauhan discussed several key reforms. Telangana became the first state in India to achieve 100% route optimization, saving Rs 12-15 crore annually. The introduction of Smart Fair Price Shops (Jan Poshan Kendra) and the use of e-POS technology have also improved the efficiency of ration distribution.

One of the department’s major achievements is the use of weather forecast technology in paddy procurement, which earned Telangana the SKOCH Award 2024. Additionally, strict action against defaulters has resulted in the recovery of Rs 409 crore worth of rice and a ninefold increase in PDS rice seizures. The state has also strengthened its rice export sector by signing an MoA with The Philippines.

Chauhan stated that these reforms have placed Telangana at the forefront of food security and public distribution in India. He emphasized that the focus on transparency, accountability, and innovation has not only improved the financial health of the Civil Supplies Corporation but has also made Telangana a national model for others to follow.
