Telangana High Court Calls for Women to Be Permitted in Mosques

The Telangana High Court recently ruled that women should be allowed to enter mosques. They issued an interim order on Monday allowing Shia women to enter mosques and other places of worship. The secretary of ‘Anjuman-e-Alavi Shia Imamia Itna Ashari (Akbari) Society’, Asma Fatima, approached the High Court stating that Shia Muslim women were not allowed to pray in mosques and other holy places. The High Court judge, Justice Nagesh Bhimapaka, heard the petition.

According to the petitioner, the committee of mutawallis of Ibdatkhana did not permit Shia women to enter the prayer halls. Despite submitting petitions to the Waqf Board, no action was taken. The counsel for the Waqf Board argued that the permission to enter the prayer halls is based on the Quran.

However, the High Court emphasized that it is not right to discriminate against women and that the Constitution grants them equal rights. As a result, the Mutawalli Committee issued an interim order allowing Shia women to enter the prayer halls.
