Hyderabad: Government Seeks Legal Advice on Medical PG Counselling Issue

The Telangana government is working on resolving issues surrounding medical PG counselling in the state. Officials are considering issuing a new Government Order (GO) or an ordinance to address the matter. This comes after a legal challenge to existing rules regarding local candidates.

The government is consulting legal experts to find a solution that ensures justice for local students in the allocation of medical PG seats. Officials are also preparing backup plans in case the Supreme Court delivers an unfavorable verdict. Discussions with the legal team are currently underway.

Recently, the Telangana High Court struck down GOs 148 and 149. These orders stated that only students who completed their medical studies under the local quota in Telangana would be considered local candidates for PG admissions. The court decision excluded those who studied in Telangana under the non-local quota.

The Telangana Local PG Students Association had challenged the government’s decision, leading to the High Court ruling. However, the government maintains that the GOs were designed to benefit local students and were not detrimental to their prospects. The Health Minister argued that some people were misinterpreting the judgement, giving the impression that the orders were against Telangana students.

The government has since appealed to the Supreme Court. A key question now is whether students who completed their MBBS in other states will be allowed to participate in Telangana’s PG counselling. The outcome of this legal battle will have significant implications for medical admissions in the state.
