Telangana CM Calls for United Effort to Secure 42% Reservations
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has urged all political parties to come together to secure 42% reservations for weaker sections in education, jobs, and politics. He promised that he would not rest until these reservations receive legal approval.
During a discussion in the Legislative Assembly, Revanth Reddy emphasized the need for all political leaders to work together. He suggested that they should meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to push for this demand. He also called on the Leader of Opposition, K. Chandrashekar Rao, and other representatives to join hands in approaching the central government.
Since the Parliament session is currently ongoing, the Chief Minister directed the Chief Secretary to request an appointment with the Prime Minister as soon as possible. He also proposed meeting with Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, to gain his support for this cause.
Revanth Reddy expressed his happiness over the unanimous support for two bills related to reservations in the Assembly. He said this strong backing proves that all parties are united in supporting weaker sections, regardless of political differences.
Speaking about legal hurdles, he noted that the Supreme Court has ruled that reservations should not exceed 50% without proper data. To tackle this issue, the Telangana government carried out a detailed socio-economic, educational, and political survey—the first of its kind in India—to provide accurate statistics.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the progress of this initiative. He mentioned that the government passed a cabinet resolution on 4 February 2024 and assured that by 4 February 2025, the Assembly would pass a resolution reinforcing their commitment. He reminded the Assembly that 4 February is now recognized as Social Justice Day to mark this effort.
Revanth Reddy firmly stated that the government’s survey is completely accurate and has shown that weaker sections make up 56% of the population. He said that a resolution recommending 42% reservations for Backward Classes (BCs) had already been submitted to the Centre. By introducing this bill, he explained, the government is ensuring legal backing for reservations. “Until we achieve this goal, we will not stop,” he declared.
