Teachers and Student Unions Oppose Changes to Anganwadi Centres

Hyderabad: Members of the Telangana State United Teachers’ Federation (TS UTF) and the Student Federation of India (SFI) opposed the State government’s recent proposal to turn Anganwadi centres into playschools up to class III.

The teachers’ group argued that pre-primary classes should be held in government primary schools instead. They welcomed the idea of converting primary and high schools into semi-residential facilities but stressed that each class should have a dedicated teacher for every subject, along with headmasters and sufficient non-teaching staff.

TS UTF president K Jangaiah and general secretary Chava Ravi demanded the immediate withdrawal of the proposal, suggesting it could lead to the closure of government primary schools.

SFI secretary T Nagaraju added that holding pre-primary classes in Anganwadi centres would harm the public education sector. He accused the government of trying to implement the National Education Policy 2020 and urged against its adoption in the State.
