Tamil Nadu Government Introduces 'Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai Thittam' to Boost Women's Financial Empowerment

The Tamil Nadu state government is launching a social welfare initiative called the “Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai Thittam” on September 15th. This program aims to give Rs 1,000 every month to 1.06 crore eligible female heads of households. It also pays tribute to former CM C.N. Annadurai on his birth anniversary.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced that the state has allocated Rs 7,000 crore for the implementation of the scheme. Out of the 1.63 crore applications received, 1.06 crore have been approved. The government plans to send SMS notifications to keep beneficiaries informed about the program.

Under the “Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai Thittam,” all women and transgender individuals above 21 years old are eligible, including unmarried and widowed women who head their households. To qualify, applicants must have an annual income of less than Rs 2.5 lakh and own less than 10 acres of dry land or five acres of wetland. The family’s annual domestic power consumption should also be less than 3,600 units.

Certain categories of individuals are exempt from the scheme, such as government employees, bank employees, taxpayers, pensioners, elected local body representatives, and four-wheeler owners.

To apply for the program, eligible women should visit their local ration shops. Each family can nominate one woman member on the ration card for the benefit. If a man is listed as the head of the family on the ration card, his wife will be considered for the scheme. Only one beneficiary is allowed per family’s ration card.

The financial assistance will be directly deposited into the bank accounts of beneficiaries. Eligible women will also be issued ATM cards for easy access to the funds.
