DPL surgeries have been suspended in Rangareddy district for seven months after four women died during family planning surgeries in August 2022. The Telangana government took disciplinary action against those responsible and issued guidelines to prevent similar incidents. Many women are now afraid to undergo DPL surgery, leading to a rise in tubectomy operations in private hospitals.
In the financial year 2022-23, 1,933 women underwent DPL operations in government hospitals before the suspension. Tubectomy operations require a longer hospital stay and cost between Rs 10,000 to 50,000, while DPL surgery allows for a three to four-hour discharge. Private hospitals have performed more tubectomy operations than government hospitals.
Men are not undergoing vasectomy due to misconceptions and fear. Only 17 people received vasectomy operations in Rangareddy district in the financial year 2022-23. DPL camps will resume once the government provides guidelines, and currently, only tubectomy and vasectomy operations are performed in government hospitals.
