Timeless Kuchipudi Classic Bhamakalapam to Be Staged in Hyderabad

The Surasa Academy of Arts and Culture, in partnership with Navya Nataka Samiti, is set to present the Kuchipudi dance classic Bhamakalapam on 30th January 2025. The performance will take place at Ravindra Bharati, Hyderabad, promising an evening of extraordinary artistic beauty and cultural celebration.

The event will showcase Smt. Madhumathi Kulkarni in the lead role of Satyabhama, a character known for its poise and complexity. Vidushi Rajashri Holla, a renowned artist from Bangalore, will portray Krishna. Guiding the production is the legendary Sri Vedantam Satya Narasimha Sastry, who will serve as the Sutradhara (narrator) and Madhavi. Sri Sastry will also contribute as a vocalist and nattuvangam artist, conducting the musical ensemble with his unparalleled expertise.

To honor the rich tradition of Kuchipudi, the evening will include a special felicitation for distinguished Kuchipudi Gurus. Dr. Vedantam Ramalinga Sastry, recipient of the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi award and former principal of Siddhendra Yogi Kala Peetham, will be recognized for his contributions. Another honoree is Natya Mayuri R. Prasanna Rani, director of Nritodaya Kuchipudi Academy and retired Head of the Department of Kuchipudi Dance at the Government Music and Dance College.

The event will also be attended by notable guests. Hon. Justice Laxmi Narayana Alishetty will serve as the Chief Guest, while Sri Mamidi Harikrishna, Director of the Department of Language and Culture, will be the Guest of Honour.

Bhamakalapam is celebrated as one of the finest works in the Kuchipudi repertoire. This iconic drama is known for its poetic richness and intricate compositions, such as padyam, kandardham, churnika, and daruvu. Unlike solo performances, Bhamakalapam highlights Kuchipudi’s unique ability to shine in both solo and ensemble traditions, making it a treasured masterpiece in Indian classical dance.
