Supreme Court Continues Hearing on SP Thirupathanna's Bail Request in Phone Tapping Case

The Supreme Court resumed hearing the phone tapping case on January 2, focusing on the bail plea of Additional SP Thirupathanna, a key accused. This case has attracted widespread attention due to allegations of unauthorized surveillance during a government transition in Telangana.

In the previous hearing, the Telangana government opposed Thirupathanna’s bail by submitting a counter affidavit. However, the hearing was postponed due to technical and scheduling issues. The current proceedings are being handled by a bench comprising Justice B.V. Nagarathna and Justice N. Kotiswar Singh.

The controversy dates back to December when allegations of illegal phone tapping surfaced. These claims were tied to destroyed hard drives at the Special Intelligence Bureau (SIB). Thirupathanna has been in custody for over eight months after his bail was revoked by the Telangana High Court.

Investigations have implicated several high-ranking officials. Among those arrested are former SIB officers Pranith Rao and Bhujanga Rao. Meanwhile, two of the main accused, Prabhakar Rao and Shravan Kumar, are still abroad, and efforts are ongoing to bring them back to India.

The Supreme Court’s upcoming decision on Thirupathanna’s bail is expected to significantly impact the investigation. It may also shape broader discussions about privacy violations and surveillance concerns in Telangana.
