Student unions protest over CMR issue

Hyderabad: Student unions have called for a detailed investigation and strict action following a disturbing incident at the CMR Engineering College hostel. It was alleged that videos of girl students were recorded in their hostel.

The Students Federation of India (SFI) state president RL Murthy and secretary T Nagaraju demanded the arrests of hostel warden Priti Reddy, along with individuals named Malla Reddy and Gopal Reddy. They also emphasized the need to ensure that the alleged videos do not leak to the public. According to the SFI leaders, cameras had reportedly been installed in the bathrooms of the girls’ hostel for the past three months, and footage was secretly recorded.

The student leaders further claimed that the college management threatened students who raised concerns about inadequate facilities and increased fees. Allegedly, they were silenced by threats of releasing the videos publicly if they continued to protest. The warden, Priti Reddy, is accused of possessing recordings of approximately 300 girl students and using them to intimidate the students into compliance.

The SFI also pointed out that this was not the first time complaints had been raised against the college. They highlighted previous incidents, including suicides, but alleged that no action had been taken by the police or government authorities. The students are reportedly demanding basic rights, such as proper facilities and quality food, especially since fees were recently increased.

In a related development, leaders from the JNTUH Protection Forum, Rahu Naik and Gopal Chand, met with the university’s Registrar, Venkateshwara Rao. They urged immediate confiscation of CCTV footage from the college’s ground floor between 12:30 AM and 5:30 AM on January 1 to aid in the investigation. They also called on the university to take stringent measures against affiliated colleges to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The situation has sparked widespread outrage, with student unions and organizations demanding justice and accountability.
