The Congress party won the recent Legislative Assembly election in Telangana. Since then, many people have been receiving a message on WhatsApp and social media claiming that Rahul Gandhi, a Congress leader, has announced a ‘3-month free mobile recharge’ offer for everyone. People are complaining about these unwanted messages, which lead to a website asking for personal information.
The messages started circulating on Sunday after the election results were announced. They are being sent from various spam numbers and are widely forwarded. Some users on social media platforms like ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) have also posted about it.
The messages contain a URL link that asks users to click on it to avail of the free recharge offer. Some posts on social media allege that the Indian National Congress has announced a ‘Free Recharge Yojana’ to attract voters for the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections.
One resident named Divya Khatri received a message on WhatsApp with a spam number claiming to offer free recharge. The message states that Rahul Gandhi is providing three months of free recharge to encourage people to vote for Congress in the 2024 elections.
Clicking on the link in the message takes users to a webpage where they are asked to provide their details. Another link directly opens the Indian National Congress website.
An activist named Asif Hussain Sohail said that the party authorities and police should take action against these spam messages and posts, as they are a form of cybercrime. He suggested involving the Cybercrime authority and creating awareness among people to avoid falling into such traps.
It is important to note that the WhatsApp forward is fake, and people are advised not to click on the link. News reports confirm that Rahul Gandhi has not made any announcement regarding free mobile recharge, and there have been no such announcements on his official social media handles or the official website of Rahul Gandhi and INC.
In conclusion, the messages claiming a ‘3-month free mobile recharge’ offer from Rahul Gandhi are false, and people should be cautious about clicking on any suspicious links.
