Singareni Collieries Plans to Expand Beyond Coal Mining
Hyderabad: The Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL) is planning to expand its operations beyond coal mining and power generation. The company is looking to collaborate with the National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) to explore critical minerals needed for India’s growing industries.
On Tuesday, SCCL Chairman and Managing Director N. Balaram met with NMDC CMD Amitava Mukherjee at NMDC’s headquarters. Senior officials from SCCL also attended the meeting. They discussed how NMDC’s expertise in mineral mining could help SCCL in its new ventures.
Balaram mentioned SCCL’s recent agreement with IIT-Hyderabad to develop technology for extracting critical minerals. He pointed out that NMDC has vast experience in mining different minerals, including critical ones, which could support SCCL’s diversification plans.
During the meeting, Balaram gave a presentation on SCCL’s coal mining operations, workforce, and future business expansion strategies. He also emphasized the need for support from the Telangana government to help SCCL grow in new areas.
NMDC CMD Amitava Mukherjee recognized the contributions of both NMDC and SCCL to India’s mineral sector. He assured that NMDC is open to working with SCCL on projects that align with the country’s resource development goals. He also hinted that SCCL could be involved in NMDC’s coal mining project in Jharkhand.
As India’s demand for critical minerals increases, SCCL’s expansion could help secure essential resources for industries like electronics, renewable energy, and defense. If the collaboration with NMDC is successful, it could be a major step toward strengthening India’s mineral self-sufficiency.
