Shopping in Hyderabad takes a hit due to increasing cash seizures

With the festive season and wedding season happening, people are rushing to buy gold, electronics, and other things. However, they are worried about the police seizing cash due to the Model Code of Conduct that is in effect because of the Assembly election in the State.

In October, there are auspicious dates for Hindu weddings and the Muslim community celebrates Rabi-ul-Awwal. Many weddings are taking place in the city. The seizure of cash by the police is creating fear among people because most families use savings for shopping and don’t have related documents. The cash limit has been set at Rs 50,000.

Police officials are checking vehicles and if they find cash without a valid reason, they seize it. Sometimes, the cash is handed over to election authorities or the Income-Tax department for further action.

Common people who have nothing to do with the election code are suffering and are afraid to carry cash for shopping. They are unsure about what papers or reasons they need to provide to the officials during vehicle checks. Many people faced difficulties when buying gold due to the restrictions.

With upcoming festivals, there are exciting offers on electronics, furniture, gold, clothes, and vehicles. However, many people had to give up their plans because of the restrictions. Traders, small businesses, and professions that mostly deal with cash are also facing trouble.

Since the Model Code of Conduct came into effect on October 9 for the Assembly elections on November 30 in Telangana, the Hyderabad city police have seized Rs 5.1 crore in cash, over seven kg of gold worth Rs 4.2 crore, and 110 liters of liquor.
