Sharp increase in dengue cases reported in Hyderabad

Dengue cases are increasing in Hyderabad district, with major government hospitals in the city seeing around 160 cases this season. Doctors are warning citizens to be cautious as cases are expected to peak soon.

The surge in dengue cases in neighbouring Karnataka, where numbers have surpassed 7,000 this year, has health experts on high alert. In Hyderabad alone, there have been about 160 cases. Outpatients at major hospitals like Osmania, Gandhi, and Fever Hospital have increased, with a significant portion showing symptoms of dengue fever.

Officials note that while the number of cases is rising in the State, it is lower than the previous year when there were 284 cases. Health Secretary directed department heads to assess vulnerable districts for diseases like dengue, malaria, gastroenteritis, and viral fevers.

Dr. Madap Karuna from EMRI Green Health Services stresses the importance of removing waterlogging around homes and institutions twice a week to prevent mosquito breeding. Identifying Aedes mosquitoes with white spots is crucial, as they transmit dengue, chikungunya, and zika viruses. Public education, surveillance, and vector control are essential for prevention efforts.

Principal Secretary Dana Kishore instructed officials to take comprehensive measures to prevent mosquito-borne diseases, including anti-larvae operations, insecticide spraying, and awareness programs with local representatives and the media.
