Residents of Surya Nagar Colony Unite Against Alleged GHMC Corruption
Over 5,000 residents of Surya Nagar Colony in Tolichowki, Hyderabad, have come together to address alleged corruption in GHMC Circle 18. They have filed a complaint with the Telangana Vigilance and Enforcement Department, accusing officials of corruption, harassment, and abuse of power. Residents claim these actions have caused delays in public works, demands for bribes, and poor-quality infrastructure.
The complaint was lodged by the Surya Nagar Welfare Association, which operates under the Jubilee Hills Colonies Forum and is led by Asif Sohail Hussain. The association has urged citizens to report corruption not only within GHMC but also in other government departments.
In their complaint, the residents highlighted significant delays in civic projects. Asif Sohail revealed that roadwork projects worth ₹70 lakh were sanctioned and tendered over a year ago but have not been completed due to alleged demands for bribes. Similarly, proposals for a sports complex and a community hall, which had also been approved, remain stalled for the same reason. He further alleged that officials, who have held their positions for over five years, have created corrupt networks, manipulated tenders, and misused public funds.
The association has appealed to the Vigilance and Enforcement director to establish a special team to investigate the allegations. They also pointed out the poor quality of roads in the Shaikpet division, reportedly supervised by the same officials. These roads have deteriorated quickly, which residents attribute to corruption and negligence.
Fazal Siddiqui, president of the association, alleged that the officials use political connections to silence those who file complaints, avoiding accountability and stifling any opposition. The residents expressed frustration over how the delayed roadworks have severely impacted daily life in their colony. Poor road conditions, especially during rains, make commuting difficult and hinder emergency services. This neglect, they argue, violates their right to proper infrastructure and erodes public trust in governance.
Asif Sohail has demanded the immediate suspension of the accused officials and called for a detailed inquiry into their assets and alleged corruption. He warned that if justice is delayed, the residents are prepared to file a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the High Court.
Muneer Ahmed, secretary of the association, emphasized the collective frustration of the residents. Despite this, they remain hopeful that the Vigilance Department will act swiftly to ensure transparency, accountability, and a resolution to their grievances.
