Poland and Russia are having a disagreement about diplomatic buildings. Poland has taken a high school building near the Russian embassy in Warsaw that was meant for the children of diplomats. The Russian envoy called it illegal and a violation of Vienna’s convention of diplomatic relations. Poland says there is a big difference in the number of diplomatic buildings each country has in the other country. The disagreement has been going on for a year. The building that Poland seized is from the 1970s and is known as the “spy nest” by Warsaw citizens.
The Polish foreign ministry spokesman, Lukasz Jasina, said that the high school building belongs to the Warsaw City Hall, and the move was following a bailiff’s order. The municipality spokesman did not comment on it. Moscow’s envoy, Sergei Andreyev, said that the school by the embassy was part of their diplomatic mission, and teachers and staff lived on the building’s territory. Andreyev said that the school would continue to work in another part of the Russian embassy’s premises, and their priority was ensuring the safety and interests of their employees and their families.
Andreyev said that Poland’s action was an intrusion on a diplomatic facility and an illegal act. He added that there would be a reaction, but he did not give further details, and a decision would be made in Moscow.
