Residential Welfare Associations (RWAs) urge newly-elected government to establish ward committees

Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) in Hyderabad are calling for the formation of ward committees in every locality to ensure good governance. The RWAs believe that local participation is crucial for the improvement and rapid progress of society. They have expressed their disappointment in the delay of major works in areas due to the lack of involvement from local politicians and municipal officials.

The general secretary of the Federation of Malkajgiri Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), BT Srinivasam, emphasizes the importance of urban residents’ participation in local governance to enhance their quality of life. He mentions that they have previously advocated for the formation of ward committees during civic body polls, but they have not been established yet.

In the past, ward committees were functional in united Andhra Pradesh, but they became non-functional after 2014 and were never reinstated. The RWAs are hopeful that the new government will prioritize the formation of ward committees with members from civil societies and RWAs to promote better infrastructural development in the city.

Syed Khaled Shah Chishti Hussaini, the secretary of the United Federation of Resident Welfare Associations, points out that the formation of ward committees would expedite development works. In the past, there were ward committees with 20% RWA participation, but they have disappeared. Hussaini expresses the hope that the new government will fulfill its promise to form ward committees for the betterment of society.

Overall, the RWAs in Hyderabad are advocating for the formation of ward committees to ensure local participation and improve governance for the benefit of society.
