Veteran Bharatanatyam dancer, Dr. Yamini Krishnamurty, has passed away at the age of 84. She died at Apollo Hospital in New Delhi due to age-related issues. According to her secretary, Ganesh, she had been in the ICU for the last seven months.

Her body will be taken to her dance institute, Yamini School of Dance, at 9 am on Sunday. The details of her last rites have not been finalized yet. She is survived by her two sisters.

Mungara Yamini Krishnamurty was born on December 20, 1940, in Madanapalli, Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. She excelled in Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi styles of dancing. Although she was born in Andhra Pradesh, she grew up in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu.

Her debut performance was in 1957 in Madras. She became well-known not only as a leading figure in Kuchipudi dance but also as the Asthana Nartaki of TTD.

Throughout her long career, she performed from the age of 17 and won several prestigious awards, including the Padma Shree, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan. She was also honored with the Natya Shastra award by the Sambhavi School of Dance.

Dr. Krishnamurty established the Yamini School of Dance in Hauz Khas, New Delhi, where she taught dance to younger generations.
