Renewal of Pochampally Ikat GI tag for 10 more years

The Pochampally Ikat Geographical Indication (GI) tag, which expired on December 14, 2023, has been renewed. This is India’s first handloom product to be registered with a GI application. The renewal application was submitted on December 15, 2003. Renewal is necessary every ten years to keep the registration valid.

GIs are similar to trademarks and need to be renewed every decade. The Pochampally Ikat GI was approaching expiration, but proactive measures by the registered proprietor resulted in its successful renewal.

The President of the Pochampally Tie and Dye Association expressed delight about the renewal of the GI tag. However, there have been instances of Ikat duplication in Gujarat and Sambalpur sarees in Odisha. The government is not actively monitoring this issue, leading to a lack of enforcement for the GI-tagged product. The association is considering introducing a trademark specifically for the Pochampally Ikat handloom to help customers differentiate between the original product and duplicates.

Pochampally Ikat was the first handloom product from Andhra Pradesh to receive a GI tag in 2004. Many weavers depend on weaving these sarees for their livelihoods. The Secretary of the Pochampally Tie and Dye Association took the initiative to renew the GI tag and is thrilled with its third consecutive renewal, which sustains almost 40 livelihoods. The association has reached out to Gujarat’s Prime Minister, Home Minister, and Textiles Minister for action against duplications.

Pochampally Ikat is known for its intricate weaving and dyeing techniques. A GI agent and IP practitioner facilitated the renewal of the GI tag and highlighted the responsibility of the registered proprietor to prevent lapses and additional charges. India has many potential products for GI tags, which help with branding and promotion.

Despite the GI tag, there are still issues with Ikat duplication in Gujarat and Sambalpur sarees in Odisha. The government is not actively enforcing the GI for this product. Pochampally Ikat is a major source of livelihood for nearly 40 villages. Weavers are happy about the extension of the GI tag and the product is being exported and exhibited in various countries.

In conclusion, timely renewal is the responsibility of the registered proprietor, and India has the potential for many more products to receive GI tags.
