The recent allocation of teachers by the District Selection Committee (DSC) to government schools in Hyderabad has faced criticism for its shortcomings. Many schools in the city are still lacking teachers, especially language teachers, despite the number of students enrolled. Some teachers have raised concerns that the appointments were made without conducting a proper survey of the schools’ needs.
Out of 878 teaching positions in Hyderabad, 584 have been filled in the recent DSC allocation. However, teachers argue that the recruitment process was flawed, with many schools still facing a shortage of staff. In particular, schools in the Old City area have not received any new teachers, forcing the current teachers to combine classes and teach multiple groups at once.
For instance, a government school in Srinagar Colony has 176 students in the primary section but only two teachers and a headmaster. Although the school needs three more teachers, no additional staff were appointed during the recent DSC counselling. A similar situation is found at two government schools in Bahadurpura, where three teachers are also needed. Other schools facing a shortage include Government High School in Jawahar Nagar, Government High School in Alia, and Government High School in Musheerabad.
On the other hand, some schools that do not require additional staff have still received new teachers. An example is Government High School in Bandlaguda, where teachers were appointed even though there was no need.
Shaymsunder, the general secretary of the Telangana State Union Teacher’s Federation (TSUTF), expressed disappointment with the recruitment process. He noted that the Education Department recruited teachers in places where they were not needed and neglected schools that were facing a shortage. He suggested the department conduct a thorough survey and then carry out the recruitment process again to address the issue effectively.
At Government Primary School Vinayaka Nagar in Khairatabad, over 120 students are enrolled, and three more teachers are needed. However, only one English teacher has been recruited so far. A senior teacher at the school mentioned that a representation letter has been submitted to the Education Department, requesting the appointment of more teaching staff to meet the school’s needs.
