The Punjab and Haryana High Court has demanded a status report from the Punjab police regarding their operation against Khalistani leader Amritpal Singh. The court questioned the police on how Singh managed to escape despite having 80,000 police officers. The court called this an intelligence failure of the state’s police. The Punjab Police has been taking action against Singh and his outfit ‘Waris Punjab De’. They have arrested 120 of his supporters, but Singh is still at large. Singh is considered a Khalistani-Pakistan agent by the government and is often seen with armed supporters. He claims to follow Khalistani separatist and terrorist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and is known as “Bhindranwale 2.0” among his supporters.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has stated that strict action will be taken against anyone trying to disrupt peace and harmony in the state. He added that no incident of violence has been reported since the operation to arrest Singh began. The crackdown comes a month after Singh and his supporters broke into a police station with swords and guns for the release of one of his aides, injuring six police officials.
