Protest Over Sexual Harassment Allegations Sparks Again Among Top Wrestlers

Indian wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia, have started a protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, demanding that the government release the conclusions of an oversight panel that investigated allegations of sexual harassment against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The wrestlers had raised the matter in January and concluded their three-day sit-in after discussions with Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur. However, they returned to the protest site on Monday. Swati Maliwal, head of the Delhi Commission for Women, posted a tweet questioning why the top wrestlers in India had been “insulted” and included a picture of them sleeping on the footpath.

The DCW issued a notice to the Delhi Police for failing to file an FIR in the matter, but the police claimed that they had received seven complaints from the wrestlers and were looking into the matter. The wrestlers had complained to the commission that despite submitting a formal complaint to the Delhi Police two days prior, their FIR had not yet been filed.
