The INDIA alliance is protesting the Manipur crisis and demanding a response from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. To symbolize their protest, all members of the alliance in Parliament will wear black attire. They have also submitted a no-confidence motion, which has been accepted by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.
The Speaker has informed the House that he will schedule a discussion on the motion after consulting with party leaders. Meanwhile, Members of Parliament in the lower House continue to protest the government’s handling of the Manipur violence and are calling for a thorough discussion on the matter during parliamentary sessions.
In Rajya Sabha, there was turmoil as the Opposition claims that Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s microphone was deliberately turned off while he was speaking. Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram accused the government of neglecting the Manipur issue, stating that no questions on the matter have been addressed in Parliament since the start of the monsoon session.
Despite the unrest in Parliament, the Central government managed to pass the Forest Conservation (Amendment) Bill, 2023 in Lok Sabha. The bill was discussed for about 30 minutes before its passage. In Rajya Sabha, the Constitution (Scheduled Tribe) Order (Third Amendment) Bill, 2022 was approved through a voice vote after the Opposition walked out.
In addition, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh clarified that his government opposes drug cartels operating in the state, not the Kuki community. Some parties had accused members of the Kuki community of involvement in the narcotics trade. Singh directed his statement towards Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga, urging him not to interfere in another state’s internal affairs.
