Private tanker owners in Hyderabad are taking advantage of the growing demand for drinking water as many areas in the city are facing water shortage. The Water board is failing to meet the demand, forcing people to purchase water tankers from private parties. However, private tanker owners have hiked the charges abnormally. The charges for a tanker by the water board are much lower compared to what private tankers charge. Despite this, the administration has not taken any action to stop the high rates.
In the past two weeks, there has been a rise in the bookings for water tankers in certain parts of the city. These areas include Nizampet, Bachupally, Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Kukatpally Jeedimetla, Bollarum, Madhapur, Charminar, Nampally, and Red Hills. Locals have mentioned that the rise of water tankers is due to erratic water supply in most parts of the city. While the water department claims to supply water within 48 hours, this is not happening and people are forced to depend on private tankers.
Residents in different areas have shared their experiences with water shortage. Some have mentioned that municipal water supply is irregular and they receive water once every five days. Others have highlighted issues with the motor of the pump house and the lack of action from the water board to address complaints. People have lodged complaints to increase water frequency in their areas and take action against private tankers, but authorities have not responded.
The situation is concerning as summer is yet to fully set in and the demand for drinking water is already high. It is crucial for the government to address this issue and ensure that people have access to affordable and reliable drinking water.
