Primate Genetic Secrets Revealed by CSIR-CCMB Study in Hyderabad

A team of global scientists conducted two investigations on Indian primate species with the help of CSIR-CCMB in Hyderabad. They used genome sequencing, fossil analysis, and an innovative deep learning algorithm called PrimateAI-3D. The research was extensive, involving genome sequencing of over 800 individuals from 233 primate species, including 19 major primate species found in India. They identified disease-causing mutations within the primate genomes using the algorithm. Dr. Govindhaswamy Umapathy and his team played instrumental roles in this research from India. The studies showed significant genetic diversity among primates across different geographic regions and taxonomies. This diversity helps us understand human evolution and diseases and is essential for future conservation of these species.

The investigations also highlighted specific primate species in India, such as the western hoolock gibbon and the lion-tailed macaques from the northeastern region and the Western Ghats. These species exhibited lower genetic diversity compared to other primates examined globally. The research can help determine conservation priorities and formulate effective strategies for preserving primate species.
