The Telangana government has issued a high alert after reports of a bird flu outbreak in neighboring Andhra Pradesh. Authorities are taking strict measures to prevent the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) and protect the poultry population.
Officials have been instructed to maintain strict vigilance and strengthen biosecurity measures. As a precaution, the government has stopped the supply of poultry chicken from Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. To enforce this, 24 check posts have been set up at various border points.
These check posts are located in areas such as the erstwhile Nalgonda district, Jogulamba Gadwal, and Zaheerabad. Authorities are not allowing vehicles carrying poultry from Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra to enter Telangana. Vehicles coming from affected areas like Kurnool are being turned back.
Meanwhile, officials in Maharashtra have identified Mangli village and areas within a 10-kilometer radius in Chandrapur district as high-risk zones. This follows the death of several poultry birds in the region.
The outbreak in Andhra Pradesh is particularly concerning, as around four lakh birds have died in three districts—Eluru, West Godavari, and East Godavari. Officials have sent samples for testing and are waiting for results.
The Animal Husbandry department suspects that the deaths may be linked to the prolonged winter season and fluctuating temperatures between morning and afternoon. To address the situation, District Collectors have been asked to raise awareness among poultry farmers, stakeholders, and the public about HPAI prevention and the importance of biosecurity measures.
