A newborn baby with COVID-19 was admitted to a hospital in New Delhi. The medical director of the hospital said that the number of coronavirus cases in the city will reach its highest point in the next two weeks. On Wednesday, Delhi recorded over 1,000 new cases in a single day for the first time in seven months. The hospital has made it mandatory for everyone to wear masks, especially since children are not vaccinated and are more susceptible to the virus.

The medical director said that the XBB.1.16 variant is affecting children more, and he urged everyone to take precautions, including wearing masks in schools and public places. He also said that the hospital has made all arrangements for patients, including children. Delhi’s Education Minister said that they are reviewing the situation and will issue guidelines for schools soon.

Medical experts have said that the new variant of the virus could be driving the surge in cases in Delhi. However, the Health Minister said that there is no evidence that the Omicron variant is leading to severe infections among children. He advised people with low immunity or severe illnesses to avoid crowded places and wear masks. AIIMS Delhi has also issued an advisory making it mandatory for all hospital staff to wear masks inside the premises and follow Covid-appropriate behavior.
