PM Modi to Inaugurate India's First Water Metro Project in Kochi

India’s first water metro project will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kochi. The project will connect ten small islands near the city and will begin with eight electric hybrid boats produced by Cochin Shipyard Limited. The aim of the project is to utilise the numerous inland water bodies to ease congestion on current transport networks. Officials believe that the integrated metro system, incorporating rail, road, and water, will revolutionise the state’s transportation industry and provide an affordable way to travel around Kochi’s picturesque backwaters.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has stated that the water metro will bring about a big revolution in the state’s water transportation industry and benefit the tourism industry. An environmentally-friendly and energy-efficient water metro service will alter the way people commute in cities and revitalise the transportation and tourist industries. Kochi Metro managing director Loknath Behra has said that the water metro will provide an elite touch at a low price tag. 15 routes totalling 75 kilometres have been streamlined, and they anticipate more electrically-powered hybrid boats from Cochin Shipyard.
