Photographer Uses AI Images to Deceive Thousands on Instagram

A US amateur photographer named Jos Avery has found a new creative outlet for his lifelong fascination with photography through the use of an artificial intelligence (AI) program called Midjourney. The program generates unique images by mashing up a vast back catalogue of images it has been “trained” on, along with rivals DALL-E 2 and Stable Diffusion. Avery admits to deceiving thousands of people by starting an Instagram account to house his Midjourney output, without being entirely upfront about the origins of the images. He eventually came clean and now populates his Instagram feed with both real photography and clearly labelled images generated from Midjourney.
