Political Tensions Rise in Telangana Ahead of MLC Elections
The political atmosphere in Telangana is heating up as the Congress, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prepare for the upcoming Member of Legislative Council (MLC) elections. These elections are scheduled to take place on February 27. The Election Commission has announced polls for the Medak-Nizamabad-Adilabad-Karimnagar Graduates’ and Teachers’ constituencies, as well as the Warangal-Khammam-Nalgonda Teachers’ constituency. Candidates must file their nominations by February 10, with February 13 being the deadline for withdrawing nominations.
The Congress party is focused on retaining the Karimnagar graduate seat, while the BRS and BJP are determined to showcase their growing influence in the state. This has set the stage for an intense political contest.
Teachers’ unions TSUTF and TPTF have already announced candidates for the elections. Incumbent MLC A. Narsi Reddy will contest from the Warangal-Khammam-Nalgonda teachers’ constituency, and Y. Ashok Kumar has been nominated for the Medak-Nizamabad-Adilabad-Karimnagar teachers’ seat.
Meanwhile, the BRS is in the process of identifying a strong candidate to challenge its opponents in the Graduate constituency, which spans Karimnagar, Adilabad, Nizamabad, and Medak, as well as parts of Warangal.
Congress leader and sitting MLC T. Jeevan Reddy is eager to run for re-election from the Graduate constituency. The party leadership is leaning toward granting him a ticket after consulting with All India Congress Committee (AICC) leaders. A resolution supporting Reddy’s candidacy will soon be sent to the party’s high command for final approval.
The BJP is also ramping up its efforts. Party leaders have been holding meetings to mobilize their cadre and connect with newly registered graduate voters across Karimnagar, Medak, and Adilabad. The BJP has finalized its candidates, naming Komaraiah from Peddapalli for the Karimnagar-Nizamabad-Adilabad-Medak Teachers’ constituency, Puli Sarotham Reddy of Warangal for the Nalgonda-Warangal-Khammam Teachers’ constituency, and Anji Reddy for the Karimnagar-Nizamabad-Adilabad-Medak Graduates’ constituency.
Two MLCs from the teachers’ constituencies—K. Raghotham Reddy (Karimnagar) and A. Narsi Reddy (Nalgonda)—are set to retire in March, adding further significance to these elections. With all major parties gearing up for a fierce battle, the upcoming MLC polls are expected to be closely watched.
