Hyderabad: The Power of Parliamentary Democracy
Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy highlighted the importance of parliamentary democracy in empowering individuals and fulfilling the dreams of the common people. Speaking on Sunday, he described India’s democratic framework as the cornerstone of its progress.
“We are fortunate that for 77 years of independence, parliamentary democracy has survived and thrived in India. In contrast, democracy in many neighboring countries and other parts of the world has faced limitations,” he said. Reddy emphasized the opportunities the system offers, saying, “Parliamentary democracy in India has allowed countless individuals, including myself, to grow and serve the nation. It’s a system we must cherish and protect.”
Address at a Prestigious Institution
Reddy delivered these remarks during a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad, which he praised as one of the top business schools in the world. He acknowledged its alumni for achieving significant success as corporate leaders in various industries.
Speaking to an enthusiastic crowd of students and faculty, Reddy shared his personal journey. He recounted his career, starting as a cadet in the National Defence Academy to becoming a fighter pilot in the Indian Air Force. “Flying MiG-21 and MiG-23 jets in frontline squadrons taught me discipline, focus, and precision. Even a small mistake could cost lives and compromise missions,” he said.
A Unique Experience at Rashtrapati Bhavan
Reddy also reflected on his time as a senior officer at Rashtrapati Bhavan, serving under Presidents R Venkataraman and Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma. “It was a unique experience that gave me a deep understanding of the functioning of our country’s highest office and strengthened my admiration for democracy,” he shared.
Transition to Politics
In 1994, Reddy transitioned to politics, leaving his government role to join the Congress party. “I was motivated by the idea of serving people directly. My first election in Kodad was a loss, which was a bitter experience but taught me resilience and determination. In 1999, I won the Kodad seat, marking the start of a journey I deeply cherish,” he said.
Since then, Reddy has never lost an election. He recounted his electoral victories, from Kodad to Huzurnagar and eventually Nalgonda as a Member of Parliament. “Every win reflected hard work and my connection with the people. Representing their aspirations in both the Assembly and Parliament has been a privilege,” he added.
Leadership and Service
As the former president of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) from 2015 to 2021, Reddy participated in national-level discussions, which further strengthened his belief in democracy. He also noted his tenure as a minister in undivided Andhra Pradesh and now in Telangana, serving in portfolios like housing, irrigation, food, and civil supplies. “Serving as a minister has been a great honor, giving me another opportunity to contribute to our State’s progress,” he noted.
Message to Students
Throughout his lecture, Reddy linked his life experiences to lessons for students. “Life is about focus and precision. Just as a fighter pilot synchronizes speed, accuracy, and planning to hit a target, we must align our goals, strategies, and efforts. Whether in studies, jobs, or public service, clarity and consistency are essential,” he concluded.
