Imran Khan, a former prime minister of Pakistan, has accused a top officer of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency of trying to kill him twice and also being involved in the murder of journalist Arshad Sharif. Khan made the allegations during a rally in Lahore. The ISI has denied the claims, which it described as “fabricated and malicious.” The Pakistan Army also criticised Khan, saying that his allegations were “extremely unfortunate, deplorable and unacceptable.”

Sharif was killed in Kenya last October after fleeing Pakistan citing threats to his life from security agencies. Khan had previously accused Major-General Faisal Naseer, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah of attempting to assassinate him in November last year.

The ISPR, the media wing of the military, criticised the “consistent pattern” of targeting officials for “sensational propaganda.” It called on the leaders concerned to use legal avenues rather than making false allegations.
